Stuff this fine goes well with any couch

In an emerging retail neighborhood, Canoe (1136 S.W. Alder St., 503-889-8545) is the modernist linchpin.

Like Martha Stewart with a lot more edge, this store is all about the art of Good Things. Each item is handpicked for its aesthetic and functional integrity, resulting in an inspiring array of perfection — the perfect thermos, the perfect bud vase, the perfect bonsai pruning shears.

Larger collections include Iittala glassware and the scene-stealer, Heath Ceramics. The unique ceramic tableware has been made in the same Sausalito factory since 1948 and still uses the original designs, clays and glazes created by founder Edith Heath. Characterized by vivid colors and heft, the pieces are so earthy and elegant that they inspire rabid fandom.

If plates don’t turn you on, there’s plenty else here to elevate your home environment (or a lucky friend’s).

A large part of Canoe’s business is special order, so view the store’s stock as a starting point rather than a limitation. (HL)
