Cast Iron Owls

Widely considered a symbol of wisdom and learning in Western society, in Japanese culture owls are considered to be symbolic harbingers of good luck, making them a popular decorative motif. This version is crafted of cast iron, or "nambu-tekki" which was first made in the 17th century in Iwate, northern Japan, an area rich with the raw material. A traditional craft, it remains popular today. The characteristic black color is the result of a lacquer glaze called "urushi" which prevents rust.
