One of the most beloved of all Japanese Buddhist divinities, Jizo serves his customary and traditional roles as patron saint of expectant mothers, children, firemen, travelers, pilgrims, and the protector of all beings caught in the six realms of reincarnation. Portrayed as a monk and dressed in a simple robe, he is a symbol of comfort and protection. The deep black-green color on this cast iron version comes from a traditional glaze known as urushi which prevents rust. Hand cast in Morioka City, Japan, the historical home of Japanese iron craft.
